Dominick and Brittany met about 6 years ago as high school students within the same friend group.
He was a sarcastic, but nice guy who rocked a mullet, and she was the shy people-pleaser type.
Both admit things felt different with each other and would even call it love at first sight. However, their relationship would wind up waiting along opposing sides of a breakup between their mutual friends.
Until one day she borrowed his jacket and the boundaries that separated them disappeared.
After a couple of months of Dominick driving Brittany to school every day, his flirtations hinted that a relationship was forming here. For her it was obvious, and it didn’t seem like he was trying to hide it at all. He even flattened the tires on his truck once, acting like they were stuck and couldn’t make it to school, giving them more time together to hang out.
Dominick, eager to make things official, but afraid of being rejected in front of their friends, told her one day at school that he had a surprise for her in his truck, but really, he just wanted to get her alone to ask her to be his girlfriend.
About 3 months in, he was sure that he was in love with her saying that things, “all felt different”, but he wanted to wait a little longer to make sure she felt the same way. Little did he know, she knew from the beginning because of how different she also felt with him.
Back then, she loved his sense of humor, which was, and still is, very sarcastic, and loved how nice he was, not just to her, but to everyone. Rather than say anything about her feelings, she waited for him to say “I love you” first, which he finally did not long after.
About 3 years in now, they’d been living together for a while, and as sure as they were about one another, they were also both secretly sure that they were ready to take the next steps together and get married.
He proposed September 1st, 2018, with his mom’s help. They were at a family cookout when his mom brought out some flowers and he got on one knee and proposed. To everyone’s shock and surprise, Brittany shouted, “NO WAY!” leading many to wonder if she’d just said no!
Fast forward to July 29th, 2020, in the middle of a global pandemic, and Brittany gives birth to their son, Levi, who’s already showing signs of being just as funny as his dad, and who keeps both of his parents on their toes all the time.
When I asked each of them how they see each other now, Dominick described Brittany as an assertive, sarcastic, and wise woman and mother, shooting Dominick’s jokes back at him, which he enjoys very much. Brittany loves how Dominick is always willing to pause and talk so they can work through what life throws at them, how great a father he is to Levi, how much they’ve been able to grow together, and how open he is able to be with her, while also maintaining his relentless sense of humor of course!
When asked about what marriage means to them, they both agreed that marriage lives in the heart, that it’s about putting in the work, being mindful, being realistic, and about thinking of the other person.
To have a strong, healthy marriage, they’ve agreed to keep up the great, family-focused communication that they’ve been practicing, understanding that it’s not about trying to win for yourself, but rather to work as a team, helping one another, being there for one another, and staying open to the others’ point-of-view.
As they stand here today, it’s apparent that they are more in touch and in-tuned with themselves and each other than ever before. Humbled by their past, grateful for their present, and excited for their future, they have vowed a life full of love, humor, and dedication that will carry them far into the future.
